Interesting Findings and Failures Found During Servicing of Power Equipment Volume II
Stihl 015L S/N: 4055455 This saw was brought in to have the recoil rope replaced. This is what was observed when the saw was disassembled. It obviously had not been clean for sometime. It is hard to believe that equipment will run with so little maintenance.
0033055 This is a photograph of the top of a B&S engine with the recoil housing removed. The coil and flywheel are in the center of image. The mower that this engine was on was brought for service because the engine would not start. A compression test revealed that there was no compression. On disassembly the condition shown here was found. The grass had blocked the cooling fins and the engine overheated. As a result the exhaust valve seat had come loose from the block and jammed the exhaust valve open. There was no indication that that this debris was caused by mice. It was concluded that it was simply due to ingestion of grass during operation.
Honda GX 140 S/N: 1589974 This photograph is of the governor gear from a Honda engine. It powered a Honda HS55 track drive snow blower. The customer said the unit was about 15 years old. The engine had been regularly maintained.. During normal operation the engine began to race and the rpms could not be controlled. The engine was turned off before any damage occurred. Upon inspection it was determined that the governor was not functioning. Subsequent engine tear down showed the governor gear to be elliptical and the teeth worn on two sides of the gear. Following replacement of the gear the engine ran normally.
